As investigators try
and piece together the sequence of events that culminated in the loss of life at
the US consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi,
some people are suggesting the violence was based on political rather than
religious motivation. Even if this rationalization is intended to diffuse the
increasing violent religious fanaticism directed at American interests
elsewhere, it is a poorly conceived logic that is fraught with denial. No
matter how you want to spin the argument, it has been proven many times over
that the root cause of these killings originates in a self-serving
interpretation of a religious ideology. This is another example of how religion
can promote an intolerance of those that do not submit to their beliefs.
