Attawapiskat First Nation Chief Theresa Spence is creating
unnecessary hurdles with her insistence to meet only with the Prime Minister
and Governor General to discuss issues of concern to her. By refusing to meet
with the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Senator Patrick Brazeau while
making time to meet with NDP leader Thomas Mulcair along with contenders for
the Liberal leadership, Spence brings into question the substance of her objectives.
If Spence is really serious in establishing a meaningful dialogue she may wish
to consider the merits for offers at bridge-building rather than pursue tactics
that create futile fences. As ultimatums are not the way to start a discourse that
may eventually necessitate some form of mutual agreement, Spence should
reconsider her current approach.
