As Americans come
to grips with the need to do something about these seemingly reoccurring mass killings,
the memory of the elementary school killings in Newtown Connecticut should not be
allowed to fade away until change happens. While stricter gun control
legislation may be the focus of some people, I believe the problem is more
far-reaching. We live in a time when we are surrounded by violence. In the
news, on television as part of so-called entertainment, computer games and so
on. Many people have become desensitized to violence. The preceding
coupled with a growing problem in mental health likely contributes to some of the
explanation for these senseless deaths. Unless those with the capability of
implementing change address the issues in a concerted effort there will be more
needless and preventable tragedies. What a shame if nothing changes!
