Guns....Madness

Less than two months ago, a disturbed young man killed his mother and then went to an elementary school in Newtown Connecticut and randomly killed 26 people, including 20 children, before turning the gun on himself. Since that tragic day on December 14th, almost 1300 people have died from guns, not in Afghanistan but across the landscape of the United States.

Unfortunately, we live in a time surrounded by violence, both real and that created for so-called entertainment. Sadly, too many of us have become desensitized to the consequences of violence. Even more disturbing is that those Americans obsessed with their ‘right’ to have guns have little interest in doing anything to reduce the ever-increasing death rate associated with guns. Rather than trying to find a common sense approach to the problem, the gun enthusiasts are increasing their home arsenals. This week, Wal-Mart, worried about running out of ammunition, placed a limit on how many bullets people could purchase at one time.

The U.S. National Rifle Association leadership has suggested that the way to deal with violence is to have more guns to protect people. Perhaps their next great words of wisdom will be to suggest replacing the hand-held torch of Lady Liberty (Statue of Liberty, New York) with a rifle. db
