Father's Day

Tomorrow, June 16, I look forward to spending some of Father’s Day with my adult children. Even though my Dad passed on a number of years ago, he will be in my thoughts with fond memories.

By today’s parenting standards, my Dad was tough, if only from my own perspective. Perhaps, as a police officer in Montreal from the late 30’s to the mid 60’s, his work brought him into contact with the reality of the life facing those who got in trouble with the law. In his concern to ensure I did not end up on the wrong side of the law, and there were plenty of opportunities in a city like Montreal, he probably over-compensated with discipline. While I did not fully comprehend his approach at that time, and as a product of his own environment, he did what he thought was best. Our own parenting skills are undoubtedly influenced somewhat by childhood experiences and although they may vary from one person to the next, I believe most parents will normally try and do their best in raising their children. What they may do may not always be the best but it is the best they know.

If I could tell my Dad one more time how much I appreciated him, I would. Have a happy Father’s Day everyone.
