Andre Marin Too Outspoken
By offering what appears to be a personal off-the-cuff
opinion on the practice of police street checks, stating he thinks they are
illegal, Andre Marin is undermining the government's plan to standardize
guidelines for the practice. To prejudge the practice with subjective comments
that individual liberty trumps any benefit derived, particularly when the
benefit contributes to a safer environment for the general population, is lacking in judgment. The Ontario
Ombudsman website states in part "The Ombudsman’s job is to ensure government accountability
through effective oversight of the administration of government services". This is accomplished by investigating complaints and providing
reports on their findings. Andre Marin's public disclosure on the
matter may have been perceived as somewhat more objective if he had withheld
his observations until the government completed its review.
