When it comes to public
transportation, there are probably not too many people in Orleans that would
agree with the observation of Kanata North BIA executive director Jenna Sudds that
they have been overlooked. Orleans has approximately 35% more residents than
Kanata and is reported to have the highest rate of residents using public
transit. The main highway to Orleans is still two lanes in each direction.
Kanata has double that, as well as a HOV lane. As far as general transportation
is concerned, Kanata has benefited far more than Orleans.
While Kanata has
prospered in attracting various businesses to locate in their area, and good
for them, Orleans has struggled to acquire anything more than services oriented
commerce. Kanata also benefits from being home to the area's main arena, a location
decision likely made without consideration about its 43 km distance from Place
d'Orleans.
Although some hockey
fans may talk about the battle for Ontario regarding the rivalry between the
Ottawa Senators and the Toronto Maple Leafs, the rivalry between Kanata and
Orleans for investment in providing opportunities for economic growth is a
battle that has favoured Kanata. If light rail does not reach Kanata before 2031,
I doubt if they will get too much sympathy from Orleans. The Orleans-Kanata
rivalry is alive and well.
