Alberta Federal Court
Justice Robin Camp is in a lot of hot water, and rightfully so, for telling a
sexual assault victim she should have kept her knees together. Having now
undergone counselling and ready to apologize, his future on the bench rests
with the Canadian Judicial Council which will review the case in September. In
this instance however, the comments of Justice Camp are unpardonable. The names of
judges are preceded by the word 'honourable' which infers having a reputation
for strong moral and ethical principles. It will be quite a challenge for the
Canadian Judicial Council to conclude that Camp's credibility and ability to
render impartial decisions can be simply restored with an apology. Although Camp
wants to keep his job, if there was any honour left, it would be in voluntarily
retiring, after apologizing.
