The Ottawa Police Service seems to be getting a lot of less than favourable news coverage regarding the conduct of their police officers. Police Chief Peter Sloly has established a new directorate, headed by Supt. Isobel Granger, to address issues of respect, value and inclusion (RVI). Supt. Granger has some unenviable challenges ahead and may learn from best practices of other police forces that have gone this route.
From my perspective, these types of endeavours, even though well-intended, may often only scratch the surface leaving root causes buried. As they say, you can lead a horse to water but you can’t force it to drink.
The OPS may also wish to consider revisiting their hiring practices and extend probationary periods. It may help in weeding out the undesirables sooner. Supt. Granger is wished success.
