On November 22nd, 50 years ago, U.S. President
John Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. Those of us around at the time may
readily recall exactly where we were and what we were doing when the news was
heard on that fateful day. We may also
remember those memorable words he gave during his inaugural address in January,
1961 and which are now etched in stone adjacent to his gravesite at the Arlington
National Cemetery. The widely referred to words of “ask not what your country
can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” continue to have
relevance in our everyday life.
If you substitute the word ‘country’ for anything else that
may be a reason for discussion, it does have substance. Whether it is your significant
other, child, parent, friend or even employer, the exercise does provide some
food for thought and/or entertainment.
“Ask not what your ???? can do for you, ask what you
can do for your ????”
PS: Considering the current self-inflicted problems of
Toronto’s Mayor Rob Ford, Toronto city councillors would likely want to exclude
the word “mayor” from that exercise. J
