Although there have
been some signs of improvement in our Canadian economy, the overall consensus
appears to be that we are not out of the woods yet. With public officials doing
their best to keep taxation increases low, taxpayers also must adjust their
expectations regarding the level of services provided, including those offered
by the OPS. As others consider a more comprehensive approach to policing, it
would appear that from Skof's perspective the solution seems to rest with
having 189 more police officers. Unfortunately, "more boots on the
ground" is not the only solution. The Ottawa Police Association president
missed a good opportunity to reach out and express a willingness to contribute
to the solution in a more beneficial manner.

Ottawa Police Association
The president of the
Ottawa Police Association, Matt Skof, is of the view that the current law enforcement
problems, as they relate to some recent shootings, are linked to a shortage in
police officers. While some people may appreciate Skof's efforts at bringing attention
to the current resource levels within the Ottawa Police Service, the timing of
these comments may serve to suggest that
having more officers is the answer to current problems. Even though Ottawa may
not have the recommended number of officers per 100,000 people, throwing more
money at the current policing challenges does not have to be the first option.
