Jagmeet Singh's Uphill Battle

Jagmeet Singh is the new leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party. Singh broke new ground in becoming Canada’s first non-white leader of a federal political party. That’s where the congratulations end.

Although Singh’s turbans are quite colourful, they represent an issue that will rub many Canadians the wrong way. Canada has always been a strong advocate of ensuring the separation of state and religion in the political domain. Unlike some of our southern friends that have a strong attachment to the phrase “In God We Trust”, and although Canada accommodates all religions, we want to keep religious matters away from politics.

Jagmeet Singh also agrees with the separation of church and state. Here’s the thing. Whether you are wearing a huge cross around your neck, covering your head with a pink turban or simply covering your entire face with only your eyes peeking out, it is hard to convince voters that religion will not influence your political leanings.

Sorry Mr. Singh, the great smile and friendly outgoing personality may capture the hearts of the NDP, but you will have a tough sell in trying to sway the doubters that your religion will be left at the door when you get to the office.
