Quebec's Ban On Peek-a-Boo Clothes
Quebec’s ban on people covering their face when giving or receiving
government services has upset those who feel the government has no right in
telling people how to dress. While some people feel the ban was designed to
target women who opt to wear a niqab, perhaps it is intended to suppress the
controls that religion has over people. You need to consider what many
Quebecers endured a few generations ago living in a province dominated by the
Catholic church. During the quiet revolution of the 60’s, Quebecers came to
realize that they had enough of being told how to live their life. Perhaps the
current opposition to niqabs is less about the garment itself and more about
what it represents and that is an overt control of how a person must live. Quebecers
may simply not want to be exposed to visible symbols that serve to remind them
of how ongoing religious indoctrination can deprive a person of some basic
freedoms. A woman can dress modestly without resorting to peek-a-boo clothing. Clothing
that can be considered as scary is best saved for Halloween.
