Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has a problem that cannot be ignored,
a problem he created 18 years ago when he allegedly groped a young female
reporter. At the time it happened, the woman immediately related the incident to
her employer. While Trudeau apparently expressed some regret at the time after
discovering the woman was a reporter, his office offered this; “but doesn’t think
he had any negative interactions”, an acknowledgement of being there but also
distancing him from the accusation.
If this was an isolated incident and given the credibility
of the information provided regarding the matter, why hasn’t Trudeau provided a
more appropriate response? Are there others waiting to see what happens with this
case? The situation is even more problematic for Trudeau who has been promoted
as a pro-feminist and a champion of the marginalized.
Although the practice of ignoring a problem with the expectation
that it will fade away may work in some situations, Trudeau’s own ‘zero-tolerance’
approach in related matters requires that he be more forthcoming with his
explanation.
