In the follow-up to the very public chastising
of Saudi Arabia, Prime Minister Trudeau has stated that his government will
continue using 'tweets' to conduct diplomacy, a mind-boggling approach for those
sensitive matters that may be better addressed through normal diplomatic
channels. What’s next? Is Trudeau and his team going to fire off similar reprimands
to Iran, China, Russia and anyone else that does share his vision of what the
world should be? Insulting your
adversary at the outset, particularly when it is understood the criticism will
not be welcomed, is hardly a winning strategy. If a majority of Canadians are
opposed to ‘tweets’ as a form of international diplomacy, it is bound to be
reflected in the outcome of the next federal election in October 2019.
