Protect The Vulnerable

Although the circumstances leading up to the current concerns regarding the level of care in long-term homes are devastating, especially those in Ontario and Quebec, this is now the government’s opportunity to take a more proactive stance in their oversight of these homes.

Many long-term care residents have no one to advocate for them and are among the most vulnerable members of our society, particularly those in dementia sectors.

Hopefully, and once COVID-19 related health issues have been addressed, the government will ensure there are stronger and more effective measures in place to protect long-term care residents. Canada’s Minister of Seniors, Hon. Deb Schulte, is urged to take the needed leadership to do what is necessary to ensure there is a level of standardized care and inspections in all homes across Canada. Perhaps an announcement to that commitment may help restore some of the confidence that is presently lacking.

While I have made some similar comments in past blogs, this issue has to be kept on the front burner until the needed changes are made, not simply as being looked into. Everyone needs to speak out.
