In recent years, the U.N.’s raison d'ĂȘtre has become an ongoing topic of
discussion. After reading the preamble (link below) to the Charter of the United
Nations you cannot help but wonder if all of its members have read it. When
former Liberal minister Allan Rock refers to the U.N. as dysfunctional,
ineffective and corrupt, it is an indication that the Government of Canada,
regardless of political affiliation, should be reassessing Canada’s
membership.
It seems that rather than promoting the U.N.’s stated purpose of maintaining
“international peace and security”, the assembly has evolved to a stage for the
self-serving agendas of some countries to badger others for more money, most of
which seldom arrives at the destination for which it was intended. As many
countries around the world gravitate to forming groups that represents their
collective best-interests, trade or otherwise, the significance of the United
Nations decreases with each passing year. Considering the circumstances of how
challenging change may be for the United Nations, its current slow demise to
irrelevance may be the answer.
