As the United States Postal Service struggles to remain a
financially viable operation, its thoughts of eliminating the Saturday home
delivery of mail in favour of a Monday to Friday service is being met with
considerable resistance. Amid declining revenues, the USPS is not the only
postal service trying to adjust their operations as they seek out other income opportunities.
Considering that so many people are now receiving their bills as well as
sending and receiving personal correspondence electronically, the reduced
volume in mail suggests that a reduced delivery service makes good economic
sense.
While the delivery of junk mail may be a good source of
revenue for the postal service, if you receive your mail from a community
mailbox location, you may notice that any nearby garbage bin is often filled
with that unwanted mail. You can eliminate waste and in the process be more
environmentally responsible, by placing a notice in your mailbox refusing
delivery of all unaddressed mail. With the unsolicited junk mail out of the way
and a lower volume of addressed mail, reduced delivery service is the reasonable
next step. If we can manage without weekend mail, people could easily adjust to
a three day mail service on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Express your thoughts
