The process of electing a new leader for the Liberal Party
of Canada is nearing its conclusion and the only surprise on the outcome will
be if it is anyone other than Justin Trudeau. While Trudeau may be the candidate
to lead the Liberals in the next federal election, tentatively set for October
19th, 2015, he faces challenges in his quest to convince Canadians
that he has the needed skills to be given the responsibility of governing
Canada. A recent survey indicated that 73% of Canadians felt that if Justin
Trudeau had any other family name, his popularity would be considerably less.
Although Trudeau’s family name may be considered an asset by some people, the
Conservatives may try to exploit any existing negativity associated with that
name. Trudeau however will have the next 2+ years to articulate his vision for
government and persuade voters that he is both capable and deserving. Considering
that voters traditionally grow tired of incumbent governments, the winds of
change may be what drives the Trudeau strategy in the months prior to election
day. Undoubtedly, speculation will flourish in the months ahead.
