Once Ottawa hockey fans and media types heard that Daniel
Alfredsson was leaving the Senators and headed for Detroit they reacted with an
understandable wide range of comments. From ‘read and weep’ to ‘selfish’, the
emotional reaction has been, from my perspective anyway, ridiculous. Most
people have goals in life and for those that think Alfredsson was going to
spend his entire hockey life with the Senators to please the fans at the
expense of his personal ambitions were being somewhat naive. Realizing that his
chances of getting his name on the Stanley Cup before retirement may be better
elsewhere, a natural goal of probably most NHL players, why wouldn’t he pursue
that dream? People in all walks of life follow a path that works for them. Alfredsson
is doing what is best for Alfredsson. Wish him well and move on. Above all,
Ottawa fans will hopefully demonstrate they are above pettiness and resist the
temptation to boo him the first time he steps unto the ice here in Ottawa
wearing a Red Wings shirt.
