Even though the investigation into the expense claims of
Senators Harb, Duffy, Brazeau and Wallin remains ongoing, the information that
has emerged thus far through media reports is leaving an unfavourable
impression of those individuals. Notwithstanding the dedication of most
senators, these recent revelations have eroded a lot of respect for the senate.
Although the general feeling of entitlement and perhaps to a lesser extent fraudulent
expense claims can probably be found in any organization, Canadians expect that
those who accept to serve in public institutions, particularly those groups
held to a higher standard of conduct, to be more trustworthy. With our
confidence level decreasing with each subsequent news report, and without
prejudging the outcome of current investigations, something drastic needs to
happen to restore our trust in this once revered institution.
