A Common Sense Approach

Setting aside our usual preoccupation with political correctness, Canadians have injected some much needed common sense into the use of the greeting “Merry Christmas”. A recent Angus Reid Global poll of 1508 Canadian adults indicated that 92% of English Canadians, regardless of their religious inclinations, favoured “Merry Christmas” over “Happy Holidays”. Even though the celebration of Christmas has its roots in religion, and there are those wishing to keep it that way, for most people Christmas has a stronger connection with family and tradition. With less than one-third of Canadians saying they will attend a church service at Christmas, it appears evident that the Christmas holiday is now much more than a religious event.
