Madeleine Meilleur; Not The Best Choice For Official Languages

As the Canadian federal government heaps praises on Madeleine Meilleur as being the most suitable candidate to become the next Commissioner of Official Languages, in view of her past position as a minister in the Ontario Liberal government the federal opposition parties are pushing the partisan issue. Notwithstanding that alleged concern, the official languages commissioner must promote both English and French. Madeleine Meilleur’s reputation as “a long-time francophone rights advocate”, rather than a bilingual rights activist, may serve to question her overall objectivity in addressing the challenges associated with impartiality.
The promotion of both official languages has its challenges. The person leading that government organization must not only be impartial but also be perceived as being impartial. I don’t believe there is sufficient evidence to indicate that Meilleur meets that fundamental requirement.
