McCallum Deserves Benefit of Doubt

John McCallum, Canada’s ambassador to China, is getting some heat regarding his comments on the U.S. government case against Huawei Technologies CFO Meng Wanzhou. Although the criticism leveled against McCallum may have some merit, perhaps his actions were intended to diffuse a tension situation and help in the release of the two Canadians being held by the Chinese government. When you consider the charge against Meng Wanzhou, it is not exactly a major crime. As steadfast positions of some principles can lead to disastrous results, it is incumbent on the decision-makers to show good judgement in resolving contentious issues of this nature. If the U.S. is truly interested in resolving their trade dispute with China, they may want to consider allowing the Jan. 30th deadline to file the required extradition documents to lapse.
