When you look at President Trump’s ploys for going after what he wants I think about the 1987 movie “The Untouchables” and that memorable Jim Malone line “He pulls a knife, you pull a gun, he sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That's the Chicago way.”
While Trump’s retaliation tactic is usually a bombastic outburst of insults and threats, it speaks to his inability to keep it at a tit for tat level. Like the classic line from the movie, his strategy is to ramp it up with whatever he thinks will work, including a constant flow of deceitfulness. Looking back over the past three years, his record of mistruths is perhaps even more shocking. This is an April headline from The Washington Post: “President Trump made 18,000 false or misleading claims in 1170 days.” That’s an average of 15 a day.
Thanks to Donald Trump, the United States has probably lost the respect of many countries. Hopefully, this November the page will turn as voters show Trump the exit door, leaving historians to assess his time in office and his successor the challenge of restoring some respect for both the Oval Office and its incumbent.
