Prime Minister Justin Trudeau continues to have his eye on getting one of the 2-year term seats on the U.N. Security Council. He seems to think that since Canada once played a useful role at the U.N., after the last world-war, Canada can again make a positive contribution. What happened decades ago is of little consequence now. Although Canada may warrant a seat on the council, I do not believe Trudeau would adequately represent views that are shared by the majority of Canadians. Trudeau’s record on the road is to preach his view of how the world should move forward. While that may satisfy his own priorities, it is one that doesn’t appeal to those countries with their own deep-rooted values. Unfortunately, as most countries don’t really care about what Trudeau thinks, especially if it requires fundamental changes to how they live, his moralizing falls on deaf ears. Perhaps it may be best for the longer-term benefit of all Canadians if Canada takes a pass this time.
