Mass media outlets around the world usually report only on those
issues that they believe may be of interest to their audience. Rarely does one
single news event reach out to all corners of our world. The death of Nelson
Mandela this week was one of those exceptional occasions that saw an astonishing
worldwide coverage of his passing. The superlative adjectives being used to
describe how Mandela lived is, from my perspective, unprecedented in recent
memory. The number of dignitaries that are expected to attend his funeral may
also be unparalleled as Mandela’s leadership was not
motivated by partisan politics but by a genuine concern for the welfare of
everyone. While monuments to people are
often created after their death, Mandela’s impact on the world was rightly
recognized when he was alive. There are few people in the world that have not
heard about Nelson Mandela. Hopefully, his style of leadership will provide inspiration
for others to follow. That would be a formidable and well-deserved enduring
legacy.
