Pot-smoking RCMP Cpl. Ron Francis knows how to get
attention, particularly of the unfavourable kind. Having recently undergone a psychiatric
evaluation he has now been found fit to stand trial and has pleaded not guilty
to three charges, including an assault against a fellow police officer. Prescribed
medical marijuana to cope with his PTSD, Francis opted to push the limits of
discretion by donning his red tunic, an RCMP uniform reserved for official
functions, and participating in some bizarre photo opportunity for the media.
While Francis may be in pursuit of a medical pension, his tactics suggest a complete
disregard for those RCMP members that wear their red tunic with pride. Rather
than exploit the issue with repeated images of Francis smoking pot wearing his
red tunic, the media would provide a better service to Canadians by completely ignoring him.
