Questionable Protesting

The double-standards of geopolitics are never-ending. Why is it okay for some Ukrainians, Egyptians as well, to overthrow an elected government and not wait for elections? Is the democratic process subject to specific conditions? As the United States and others officially denounce the actions of Russia in Crimea as a “land grab”, perhaps protesting to satisfy optics while recognizing they are banging their heads against the wall, why remain silent when other countries act in less than truly democratic ways? Why is it okay for Israel to keep building in a territory whose ownership is still uncertain? Is that not a land grab? The democratic process should not evolve around convenience or other self-serving interests, particular those of unaffected players. This is probably less about what is good for the Ukrainians and more about the ongoing tit for tat diplomacy between Russia and the United States. With the annoyance/protest of other European countries likely motivated by their own respective political/economic needs, a resolution will be achieved in due course. Canada’s protest is more about Canadian politics and a desire to be seen as relevant on the international stage. For now, and pending the next crisis which may be either genuine or fabricated, we’ll be subjected to the usual barrage of vitriolic grandstanding.
