The CRTC "pick-and-pay" decision deserves only minor
applause. The proposed so-called "skinny basic" package will probably
offer so many channels with very low viewership that consumers may end up being
no further ahead in trying to retain what they now watch. Cable companies will understandably
approach this change keeping their financial bottom line as their main priority
and it is doubtful the adjustments will produce any noteworthy savings for most
people. As a consumer, I will hold off in breaking out the champagne. The
channel offerings will probably end up being a case of pick and pay and pay and
pay.
