The Conservative government cannot afford to disregard the
growing widespread opposition to the construction of the Memorial to Victims of
Communism within the boundaries of the Judicial Precinct. The Supreme Court of
Canada building is and must continue to be the focal point of that area. The
entire Judicial Precinct should project an appearance of absolute detachment
from all that can be perceived as showing a connection to any event or cause. Without
an explicit appearance of independence, the expected supremacy of the court may
be eroded. While the justices of the Supreme Court may be able to attend to their
responsibilities free of external influences, the Judicial Precinct is not the
place for other distractions. Although there may be some merit to having the
victims memorial, another location must be found. If the government opts to
ignore the significant opposition to this decision, voters have the option of
expressing their dissatisfaction on election day.
