Long-Term Care: Less Talk & More Action
Notwithstanding the optics associated with an inquiry into Ontario’s
long-term care system, as requested by NDP leader Andrea Horwath, it may simply
confirm the need for more proactive measures. While improvements in resource
levels and related training are known requirements, the safety of residents would
be increased with the installation of video monitoring in all common areas where
personal privacy is not an issue. Equally important is the need for random and
unannounced inspections by government officials, addressing both health-care and
personal safety considerations. Now that the wide scope of the problem has been
duly documented, we need the government to move forward with a plan that has
less verbiage and more decisive action.
