The Hard Rock Casino Ottawa at the Rideau Carleton Raceway is
expected to be open in 2022. Although the new casino may entice some Ottawans
away from the Casino Lac-Leamy, a significant part of Ottawa’s population will
remain in closer proximity to the Gatineau location. From the Place d’Orléans Shopping
Mall in the east, the Rideau Carleton Raceway is about 9 km’s further than
Lac-Leamy. It is also about 5 km’s further than Lac-Leamy from the Kanata
Centrum Shopping Center in the west. While some Ottawa area residents may opt
to part with their money in Ontario, the added time and expense for travelling
the extra distance could override that inclination. Based on unclear
calculations, it may be wishful thinking for Hard Rock to project receiving $62
million in redirected revenue from Lac-Leamy. But then, many new risky undertakings
are often marketed with inflated optimism.
