The news media is
giving considerable attention to the decision by the Augusta National Golf Club,
home to one of the most prestigious annual tournaments, the Masters, to now
allow women to join as members. While women had been allowed to play golf as a
guest, it remained a bastion of male dominance until now.
Unfortunately, this was
probably less about removing the discrimination factor as it was about
retaining one of their main sponsors, IBM, whose current CEO is a woman. While
the motivation for change appears suspect, at least change is happening and
that’s positive. The golfing world welcomes Augusta to the 21st century.
