Ontario Liquor Laws Outdated
In 1980, former Ontario
Premier David Peterson considered the idea of allowing corner grocery stores to
sell beer and wine. Successive governments since then have also debated the
idea and now, three decades later, we are still no further ahead. Premier
Dalton McGuinty’s recent assertions that the centralized control of liquor by
the LCBO makes Ontario a “safer place” is an unconvincing excuse for
maintaining the status quo. The reality is that teenagers and others who want
any type of controlled goods will always find a way to acquire them. After
years of listening to the naysayers about the alleged harm that would follow a
modernization of Ontario’s archaic liquor laws, it is time to put those
unsubstantiated fears aside and allow Ontario to enter the 21st
century.
