With Omar Khadr’s transfer
to a Canadian jail from the United States, the Liberals and NDP wasted little
time in condemning the Conservatives for taking so long to bring him back.
There are two extremely polarizing opinions on Khadr’s involvement with respect
to the killing of a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan. Those on the right are of the
view that he was an American problem and should have remained their problem
while those on the left tend to think of Khadr as a victim, a child-soldier
duped into leaving Canada to fight against U.S. forces in Afghanistan, perhaps
influenced by his own terrorist sympathizing father.
Whatever your views,
Khadr is now Canada’s problem. The bleeding hearts are anxious to rehabilitate him
and the less sympathetic probably wish he simply disappeared. If the NDP and Liberals
treat this as an opportunity to exploit this matter for their own political
gain, as they seem anxious to do, they had better tread softly.
