A few hours after the disabled cruise ship Carnival Triumph arrived
in Mobile, Alabama, some passengers were already in discussions with lawyers about
legal action. Even though the cause of the troubles had not yet been fully investigated
and notwithstanding the liability limitations passengers agree to when
purchasing their cruise tickets, some felt that Carnival’s immediate offer
of a full refund, payment of travel costs to return home, $500 plus a free
future cruise was not going to cut it. Although the kneejerk reaction to
address disputes through litigation does not always generate the expected
get-rich outcome, it keeps the legal community gainfully employed.
Unfortunately, future consumers get to pay the bill.
