While Hugo Chavez may have been perceived as a hero to some
Venezuelans, he floundered his way through 14 years of mismanagement. Chavez’s
handling of the economy has left the country with a massive debt load,
mindboggling when you consider the wealth the country has with the sale of oil.
Although government plans to place the body of Chavez on permanent public
display may serve to perpetuate the myth that he was some kind of champion of
the underdog, the future interests of Venezuelans are probably best served if his
dubious legacy was not glorified in such a manner.
