When people elect their representatives they expect that
those elected will promote and advance policies that reflect the common good of
the majority, foregoing the temptation to succumb to the self-serving interests
of certain groups. While the issue of gun control in the United States may be
controversial, the idea that politicians are now prepared to back away from
advancing stricter gun control laws simply because of the resistance being
created by the National Rifle Association (NRA) and a few others it makes you
question the concept of democracy as it relates to following the will of the
majority.
Approximately one
percent of the American population are members of the NRA and 70% of that
membership supports the background checks being proposed. And yet, that
miniscule minority opposed to more gun controls which accounts for a little
more than one million NRA members against a U.S. population of almost
314,000,000 is forcing lawmakers to back away from trying to implement
legislation that the vast majority of the people want. The word mindboggling is
an understatement. Perhaps that part of the U.S. Constitution mentioning “We
the people..” was actually crafted by the NRA and not the founding fathers of
the United States.
