Religion Gone Wild

The issue of turbans is once again in the media, particularly as it relates to soccer players apparently everywhere in Canada being allowed to wear the head covering, except if you are living in La Belle Province. Quebec has always marched to its owner drummer, especially a few decades back when the Catholic Church issued the marching orders. One would have thought that once Quebecers had cut their apron strings to mother-church, their newly discovered ability to think for themselves would have included a good dose of tolerance. Not so. Many Quebecers are still influenced by old thinking patterns like hanging crucifixes and making sure that other religions are kept at bay, perhaps in fear of being sucked into submission by another religion.

From my perspective, religion of any denomination has no place outside of home and places of worship. PERIOD. If it was kept in check, we would have many fewer problems. I simply don’t understand why those in uniform such as police, military or firefighter need to have their uniforms adjusted in order to accommodate religious items. Why can’t organizations tell prospective employees or sport team players they don’t care who or what they worship as long as it’s on their own time? Between 9 and 5 (or whatever the shift) people should be expected to wear the organizational dress, unaltered. Freedom of religion should not trump freedom from religion.

This ongoing discussion about turning everything upside down to accommodate everyone’s religion is lunacy at its finest.
