Pope Francis In Brazil

Growing up in Montreal, many decades ago, I did not have to venture very far to see massive churches constructed with a level of decorative detail that most people could never afford. From the Vatican to cathedrals around the world, the estimated value of the artwork that adorns these religious buildings has never been completely calculated. While the church has surrounded itself with priceless art, along with a worldwide network of property, its leaders encouraged their followers to lead a life that set aside goals of power and money in favour of caring for the poor and less fortunate.

Pope Francis, currently touring Brazil, continues to preach the same message. Although he has shunned some of the grandeur of office that Popes usually have, his presence in a sea of opulence runs counterproductive to attaching any credibility to motivating his followers to lead a life of meagre means. Considering the Pope’s popularity in Brazil, most people there probably don’t care if the church does not practice what it preaches.
