While Russian President Putin may have scored more political
points with his offer to support a plan for the removal of Syria’s chemical
weapons, it was U.S. President Obama that provided the needed motivation with
the threat of military action. If Russia and the United States can agree on the
proposal to remove and destroy Syria’s chemical weapons, the logical next step
would be to do the same with their own stockpiles of similar weapons. I guess
we all know that’s not going to happen. Superpowers seldom practice what they
preach to the underdog.
PS: In fairness to the U.S., I should have indicated that they did start the process to destroy their chemical weapons. Job not completed though.
