Problem Police Officers-No Easy Fix

The following is further to a Nov. 13th Ottawa Citizen report on how police officers are dealt with for their actions.

While there are bad apples in every work environment we tend to show a greater level of resentment with the process followed when the transgression occurs in a profession where our expectation of conduct is higher. Whether the person is a police officer, senator, teacher, clergy, dentist or another profession thought to have excellent moral character, everyone is entitled to due process even if that outcome does not meet our own standard of what we deem suitable. Even though the comments expressed by Richard Warnica as well as those of Darryl Davies have some merit, particularly as it relates to finding an appropriate remedy to a problem, it is doubtful that either of them had access to all the circumstances that may have been considered in each of the cases referenced. There is no easy fix to these situations and we need to have confidence in those that are entrusted to oversee the resolution of these matters that they will do so in a fair and objective manner. Let's not forget the vast majority whose good work seldom attracts public attention.
