EXOS Research just completed a random survey of 803 Ottawa
residents asking them whether or not they agreed with the city approving
cannabis retail stores. It was interesting to note that 43% of survey
respondents opposed the proposal. Although less than convenient locations may
have some users remain with their current suppliers, is it not in the best interests
of both users and non-users to have government regulations to help ensure proper
controls? Like alcohol and cigarette taxes, the new tax revenues will also benefit
the broader population. On Dec. 13th, when city council opens the
floor to public input and while we do not have to personally embrace retail
outlets, denying them a government managed control is not the solution. Without
them, cannabis users will continue to get all their pot through their current illegal
networks, also not the answer.
