As there is some fundamentally wrong with
any organization that has a grievance system which allows issues to remain unresolved
for several years, the RCMP will now be able to set aside some grievances whose
primary purpose is to delay a predictable outcome. While finding the right
balance between doing what is right for individual members as well as addressing
the needs of the broader organization can be a challenge, with these changes
the RCMP is acknowledging that it also has a responsibility to Canadians to
manage its financial resources prudently. Even though these latest
administrative changes appear directed at medical cases, the RCMP needs to go
further to try and eliminate what are best described as nuisance grievances. If
a member had to pay a fee for each grievance, refundable only if the grievance
was upheld, there would be a lot fewer grievances.
