In today's Ottawa Citizen, NDP Leader Tom Mulcair is calling
for the resignation of Justice Minister Peter MacKay for what can be best
described as innocuous comments in Mother's and Father's Day messages is going
beyond what is expected. A House of Commons article on the role of opposition
states in part that "they work to ensure that legislation is carefully
considered, and that differing views on important initiatives are publicly
expressed and defended." It is a
challenge to make a connection between that statement and Mulcair's comments on
MacKay. As there are so many other significant
issues to scrutinize, there's no need for the official opposition to focus
their time on such trivial matters, particularly when so many Canadians will
accept those parental good wishes in the positive manner intended.
