Trump Misses The Mark, Again

In his response to the Sunday killing of 26 people in a small-town Texas church U.S. Pres. Donald Trump said it was not a gun problem. While mental health may have been the driving force behind these killings, guns are a part of the problem. There are more guns than people in the United States and it is very naïve to state, perhaps more of a convenience to appease the NRA and Trump’s base of supporters, that the proliferation of guns is not part of the problem. Trump also had the same dismissive reaction to the October killings in Las Vegas where 58 people died and 546 were injured. Trump could have and should have stated there was a growing urgency to tighten the laws pertaining to the purchase and storage of guns. With so many areas in government at both the state and federal levels that deal with gun control in one way or another, there is a need to have an efficient way of sharing information in order to have more effective controls in place.
