Over the next 2 months Ontario voters will have to decide
who they want to form the next provincial government. The June election is important
in that the Liberals have been there for 15 years and many people feel it may
be time for a change. The current political offerings however, based solely on
their proposed spending plans, is cause for concern. Forum Research suggested that
while the current polarizing positions may appeal to those on the extreme left or
right it has created a ‘vacuum in the centre’.
Based on Monday’s throne speech the Liberal platform seems
to be edging further to the left making it a challenge to see any meaningful
difference between them and the NDP. While not intending to offend our men and
women of the navy, the Liberal and NDP plan to spend like a drunken sailor is
bound to leave the taxpayer with a big hangover. The PC’s are also likely to
create some serious headaches with their proposed uncalculated slash and burn ideas.
With the vast majority of voters gravitating to the middle and given the apparent
desire for a change in government, the parties, and in particular the PC's, need to place more emphasis on offering
what is most appealing to that critical centre mass. Right now, there are no realistically
viable options.
