Although Ottawa baseball fans were instrumental in setting
league attendance levels in the early 1990’s, the interest in baseball eventually
dwindled. We have been struggling ever since
in our search to use the ballpark to financial advantage, with all attempts unsuccessful
and ultimately short-lived. If past performance is a good indicator of future
behaviour, the idea of adding another $5.7 million in costs for renovations
based solely on an ‘expectation’ that positive change will occur is an unconvincing
argument. With the awareness that there
is a high probability that future expenses will continue to surpass revenue, perhaps
it is time for the city to rid itself of this financial albatross. db
