The actions of Senators Duffy, Brazeau and Wallin have
certainly raised questions regarding issues of entitlement and accountability
in the senate. While few may argue with the proposal to suspend them without
pay, the timing of this action needs further explanation. Even though Canadians
may expect senators to be held to a higher standard of conduct and perhaps
subjected to more severe disciplinary measures, there is also a desire to know
that everyone that may have been associated with the transgression is held
accountable. Although the resignation of these three senators may be the hidden
agenda behind this suspension proposal, that result risks closing the door on
the affair without ever knowing the full extent of what happened in the PMO,
including the Prime Minister’s role. That should not be allowed to happen. If
there’s nothing hidden, there’s nothing to fear.
